“Then God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was light.” (Genesis 1:3 NRSV)
What powerful words! The story of creation in Genesis describes the work of God as initiated and instigated by words. God speaks, and the world comes to life. Not only that, but what comes into being is good, and pleases God.
Not all of our speech and words have such pleasing and life-generating results. Our speech does have the capacity to hurt or heal, to build up or tear down, but none of us can call forth a planet with merely a four-word command.
On this Sunday after Pentecost, we remember that God has chosen to partner with us in the creation of God’s kin-dom on earth. The Holy Spirit gave the gathered disciples the ability to speak the Gospel in all the languages of people gathered in Jerusalem, and sent them all on their way to bring the good news to the ends of the earth. That same Spirit is given to each of us as we embark on a journey of faith.
May the Spirit empower us to speak creatively, rather than critically or destructively, to continue the good and pleasing work entrusted to humanity as the caretakers of God’s creative masterpiece. What words will you choose to speak today?
